Why do local times differ?

The International Date Line

Between UTC−12 and UTC+14, calendar dates can differ by more than one day. The International Date Line is a convention crossing mainly the Pacific, not a perfectly straight border.

Half-hour and quarter-hour offsets

Time offsets are not always whole hours. India observes UTC+5:30, Nepal UTC+5:45, and parts of Australia also differ. The actual offset is calculated for the time of your visit.

Different daylight-saving rules

London, New York, Bern and Sydney change clocks on different dates. Time zones are sets of geographic and historical rules, not merely UTC numbers.
